What are cataracts?

The Cataracts they are a total or partial opacity of the lens of the eye. They occur when the natural lens of the eye, the lens, which has refractive capacity and allows to focus on objects and the passage of light, progressively loses transparency. This happens as a natural part of each person's aging process. Although there are other factors that cause them, such as diabetes, eye infections or trauma and genetic inheritance.

The only alternative treatment for this visual problem is the cataract operation through phacoemulsification e implant of an intraocular lens.

Currently, the operation of cataracts is performed as early as possible, once the patient begins to notice their symptoms and perceive a deterioration in their quality of vision, regardless of whether or not they have refractive problems (presbyopia, myopia, farshigtednessand / or astigmatism).

What is the operation of cataracts with multifocal lenses?

Cataract surgery through phacoemulsification e intraocular lens implant which replaces the lens of the eye is the most frequent intervention in the world of ophthalmology and the procedure whose results are more positive and report a greater impact on the quality of life and the vision of patients. With this operation, the patient can reduce the use of glasses after surgery.

What is the multifocal intraocular lens used in cataract surgery?

An multifocal intraocular lens is the one that is placed inside the eye during cataract surgery and is replaced by the natural lens of the eye, the lens. The objective is to provide a vision of distance, intermediate vision and close up and to be able to do without glasses.

Patients who can in principle undergo a multifocal lens implant are those with a normal eye (they do not suffer from any other ocular disease), they have a particularly high visual defect (for example, more than 10 diopters of myopia or more than 5 of hyperopia), and are older than 45-50 years. For older patients, who undergo cataract surgery and have normal visual potential, they can see much better using these lenses, since they allow avoiding the use of glasses at all distances.

What to do before the operation of cataracts with multifocal lenses?

The patients must go to a previous ophthalmological consultation in which their needs will be assessed and the necessary tests will be carried out to select the most appropriate intraocular lens. In addition, you will be told which drops to use before surgery.

What to do after the operation of cataracts with multifocal lenses?

After the operation the patient can go home. You must remain at rest until at least the next day and avoid reading and efforts for at least a week. The ophthalmologist surgeon will indicate if you should take any medication or administration of drops.
