What is meant by dry eye?
It is a disorder in the tear film that causes damage to the ocular surface and causes discomfort. There are different degrees of dry eye, and discomfort varies between mild and severe, which can cause a worsening of visual quality.
Dry eye syndrome affects more than 40% of the population, but this percentage is actually much higher in people who usually use computer screens, or those who spend a lot of time in heated or air-conditioned environments.
Why does dry eye occur?
Dry eye syndrome occurs when there is an alteration in the structure of the meibonian glands of the eyelids that produce the protective oil layer of the tear film. This layer helps protect the eyes from diseases that affect the ocular surface and also prevents the watery part of the tears from evaporating when the eyes are open. Without this oil layer, the eyes become more sensitive to the negative effects that dry climates, air conditioning, computer use, reading and other daily activities can have on long-term eye health.
What is the treatment?
- With heat pulsation treatment, heat is applied in a localized manner and a therapeutic pressure is performed on the four eyelids (upper and lower). This improves the drainage of the Meibomian glands. These glands are responsible for providing lipids to the tear, that is, the fatty part that prevents evaporation and makes it of good quality.
- Pulsed light treatment takes approximately 12 minutes in each eye.
- Normally, its beneficial effects remain between one and three years, and in some cases more.
In which cases is it used?
The thermal pulsation technique is used to treat dysfunction of the Meibomian glands, related to inflammation of the lower eyelids and dry eyes.
Generally, it is usually found in elderly people, in people with hormonal disorders (adolescence and menopause), a patient who is also used to contact lenses, or also to people who have undergone treatments for skin diseases or chemotherapy.
