Since the 2005 year, each 14 March Is celebrated the European Day for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Risk, with the objective of drawing attention to the citizenship about the importance of the cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Above all, this day serves to emphasize the ability of people to influence the main risk factors involved in most of these diseases, such as tobacco, the increase in cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes without control, the obesity and the Sedentary lifestyle.

On this Day it is necessary to emphasize that everything possible must be done to avoid or reduce risk factors, and to achieve this, the involvement of people and, especially in the case of minors, of their families is indispensable.

80% of premature deaths caused by this set of diseases could be avoided by following a healthy lifestyle

What happens in Canary Islands?

According to the data provided by Canary IslandsStatistics Institute, in Canary Islands, 27% of deaths occurs as a consequence of cardiovascular diseases. Practically one of every three deaths registered in Canary Islands is caused by a cardiovascular disease. In this way, CVD remains the main cause of death in the islands.

Furthermore, Canary Islands is between the communities with the figures of 'bad' cholesterol (LDL) higher. The problem is that cholesterol is asymptomatic, so specialists recommend performing annual analyzes from the 30 years to control these levels. In addition, you should avoid the intake of saturated fats, alcohol and increase the consumption of blue fish, olive oil and nuts.

In this sense, the World Health Organization remember that CVD is the leading cause of death worldwide and that the 80% of premature deaths caused by this set of diseases could be avoided by following a healthy lifestyle that leads to the reduction of the aforementioned risk factors.

By sex, cardiovascular mortality has a greater impact on women than men, in fact, it is estimated that more than one 30% of mortality in women is related to diseases of the circulatory system. In the case of men, heart attacks are the second cause of death. We talked about this interesting topic a few weeks ago in our article about the results obtained by the Study of healthy habits and well-being in women carried out by DKV Institute of Healthy Living

Cardiovascular prevention: how to prevent heart disease from appearing

Nowadays, the health of each person is, to a large extent, conditioned by the lifestyle that they decide to adopt. Tobacco, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure, stress, alcohol and drug use are the main cardiovascular risk factors. In addition, in recent years new risk factors associated with current lifestyle have been detected, such as the Sleep apnea, el Stress  and contamination.

Do you want to know more about the health of the Canaries?

Those people who have two or more of these factors greatly increase the level of risk of cardiovascular disease. En CanaryDoctor we want to recommend a series of guidelines to reduce the risk of suffering an CVD:

  • Evita the consumption of tobacco
  • Do daily exercise
  • Make periodic checks of cholesterol levels and blood sugar
  • Keep a balanced diet
  • Reduce or avoid salt consumption
  • Drink at least 2 liters of water per day

It is for all of this that days like today, 14 March, are necessary to safeguard our health and to prevent these diseases. To treat CVD, the modification of our habits is essential and it is important to be aware of our role and our responsibility when it comes to minimizing risks. From childhood, within the family, and throughout life, we must take care of our diet with a healthy diet, balanced and low in fat and salt, make at least 30 daily minutes of exercise, avoid stress, tobacco and the excess of alcohol.
