40% of cancer cases could be prevented, according to a study

What would you do if you knew that your child will have some type of cancer at some time in his life and you could avoid it? 40% of cancers could be prevented by improving our habits.

Know now, figures from the study of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEO) and recommendations of his campaign "Change your future, you decide".

The 4 February is celebrated International Day Against Cancer, with the objective of raise awareness and mobilize society to advance in the prevention and control of this disease. This year, an important study tells us why we don't prevent cancer (and how we can do it). We tell you in CanaryDoctor.

Would you avoid cancer of a loved one?

Although it does not happen in the near future, unfortunately it could happen that cancer touches a member of your family or you. The accumulation of bad habits of life deteriorates by leaps and bounds the health of those who practice them. 

I would change something if ... Let's take more care of our eating? If we avoid the overweight and obesity? If we control more of the food we consume? If we practice more sport? If we promoted from education, how important is it in the family to eat well, such as drinking water and exercising regularly? And the sun? A recent study by SEOM tells us that we could improve statistics (and in a considerable way).

Most relevant data from the study of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology

Currently about one third of cancer deaths are due to five main risk factors for lifestyle and dietary: tobacco and alcohol consumption, high body mass index, reduced intake of fruits and vegetables and lack of physical activity.

To mark the World Cancer Day the conclusions of a THE STUDIO by the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) which reveals that 40% of cancers can be prevented, wearing Healthy lifestyle habits, avoiding tobacco, alcohol, obesity, poor diet, unprotected sun exposure and sedentary lifestyle.

Furthermore,  The study states that:
- 1 in 5 deaths from cancer in Europe they are due to tobacco.

- The obesity it is related to 9 types of cancer: breast, uterus, colon, kidney, gallbladder, pancreas, rectum, esophagus and ovary.

- The cancers more frequently diagnosed in Spain in 2020 will be the colorectal, prostate, breast, lung and urinary bladder cancer.

Women and cancer: an increase in cases, nothing encouraging ...

According to this Study, the number of new cancer cases diagnosed in Spain in the year 2020 will reach 277.394. However, it is worth noting the continuous increase of new cases in women, of almost 1% compared to 2019, compared to the decrease in the incidence in men over half a point. 

One of the main reasons for this continuous increase in the incidence in women is the increase in the number of lung cancer cases, which has become the third tumor with the highest incidence in Spanish, after breast and colorectal.

Campaign: "Change your future, you decide”

In this sense, SEOM has launched the social awareness campaign to prevent cancer "Change your future, you decide". This initiative, has the objective in the next years of strengthen the prevention of malignant tumors, introducing more training on healthy lifestyle habits.

Are our children and young people well informed?

Recently, the Spanish Association Against Cancer and SEOM conducted a survey of 1.700 teachers public, concerted and private centers, of which 88% believe that this subject should be taught during school hours, explained by experts outside the center and with the involvement of families. But this does not happen, and teachers do not have specific support or training to develop these issues.

Sedentary and obesity in Canary Islands

El Sedentary lifestyle is one of causes of cancer more easily avoidable; but changes in life habits must start at childhood. It has been shown that physical exercise is a good way to avoid not only obesity and derived diseases, but also certain tumors. 

Changes in life habits begin to be urgent, Specially in Canary Islands whose childhood obesity index It is one of the largest in Europe.

In our society, sport is currently not being effectively promoted among the youngest, neither in their homes nor in educational centers. We have in our hands the possibility of radically changing their future.
