Summer Infections and Conditions
Summer arrives as the most anticipated season, it means: joy, vacations, sun, beach, ... but, nevertheless and, due to the increase in temperatures, in summer, this leads to a series of pathologies that are more frequent at this time.
Among the most common are conditions such as:
Fungal infections
In summer, public swimming pools are one of the easiest places to get fungal infections. The most common fungus is the so-called 'athlete's foot', which affects the feet. This type of infection lasts short or long, depending on the type of fungus, although it can reappear if not treated properly. It arises in humid and warm areas.
- Prevention: Walking shoes on the edge of the wet floor wearing flip flops, and also wearing them in showers, a place where fungi are frequent.
- Recommendation: Dry your feet well after each bath and do not share a towel or shoes.
- Treatment: It can be solved with antifungal or antifungal creams available over the counter in pharmacies and thus control the infection.
URINE INFECTIONS
Excessive humidity or frequent swimming in the pool can alter the vaginal flora and its defense mechanisms at this time.
- Symptoms: Burning when urinating, going to the bathroom many times and urgently, lower abdominal pain or feeling like you feel like having urinated.
- Prevention: Blueberries have the ability to inhibit the adhesion of bacteria to the cells of the bladder epithelium. It can be administered in different ways: juice or tablets, and they significantly reduce the number of urinary infections.
- Recommendation: If at any time you have urinary incontinence, we recommend submitting a urine analysis and culture so that the doctor can rule out that they are caused by an infection.
- Treatment: Treatment to fight urinary tract infections it includes antibiotics, if they are caused by bacteria, or antivirals if they are caused by viruses. To effectively administer both types of drug, the specialist doctor has the possibility of performing a sensitivity test or antibiogram, which helps him choose the most effective against the type of microorganism that is causing the infection.
OTITIS
This problem affects more and more people in summer, since they are spread on beaches and swimming pools through bacteria. These arise from the combination of water and heat. Although water favors otitis, on some occasions the fungi that spread it are found in the ear itself, waiting for the appropriate conditions to arise that encourage its development. A bath may promote otitis externa, even if the water does not contain bacteria.
- Prevention: Do not immerse yourself in water continuously, or failing that, do so with bath plugs. In addition, the ears must be cleaned carefully with suitable objects and dried after bathing with a gauze or towel.
- Recommendation: If the otitis has already been contracted, the ear should not be wet. It is essential to cure the infection correctly and definitively to avoid risks of reappearance.
- Treatment: It is advisable to take analgesics to mitigate the pain. There is some home remedy that also helps to ease the discomfort, such as applying hot dry cloths to the ear.
INSECT BITES
Bites can cause inflammation, vomiting, dizziness or fever. Bees, wasps, mosquitoes, fleas, bedbugs ...
- Prevention: We must be alert and try to use insect repellants while we are at home to prevent them from entering homes.
- Treatment: Once we have been victims of the bite, the correct thing is to disinfect the wound, and apply ammonia or specialized creams on them. In the case of wasps, prior to applying lotions, it is necessary to remove the stinger to prevent the venom from spreading.
ALLERGIES
In summer we must pay special attention to a series of frequent allergies in this season.
These include: insects, chlorine, certain fruits, such as melon or peaches, or changes in time.
- Prevention: Caution when consuming soft drinks and sugary drinks outdoors as they attract different insects and thus avoid unnecessary bites. Avoid swimming pools with a lot of chlorine. Be careful if you have a pollen allergy when eating the aforementioned fruits.
