What are fibroids?
Myomas are benign tumors that are presented in the 70% of women throughout his life.
You must know that the fibroids ...
They are not carcinogenic (There is always the possibility that a fibroid may degenerate, but it is very unlikely), but it can affect the quality of life of women in different ways.
They may be asymptomatic but in turn there are some that are of one varied symptomatology.
They can produce pains although the most frequent are very abundant rules and long ones that may require even blood transfusions.
They can also be cause of inconvenience in sexual relations, pelvic pressure, discomfort during urination, discomfort in the rectum, etc.
They can be cimportant cause of sterility, infertility and problems during pregnancy and childbirth
What are the causes of Myomas?
The cause of fibroids is not known, it seems that they have a hormonal relationship but the exact cause is not known, although they are very frequent in women throughout their lives.
How does a Myoma affect fertility?
The fibroids depending on where they are can affect fertility because they can be in a place that occupies the tubes and do not allow the entry of ovules or sperm.
They can also be at the level of the cervix preventing the rise of sperm or may be deforming the cavity and that means there is no pregnancy or even that an abortion can occur.
What treatments are there?
There are 2 types of treatments for Uterine Myomas:
The "Medical Treatments
" and the “Treatments with Surgery".
Here we explain the main differences.
Medical treatments of the myoma
Until now fibroids were treated with medical treatments that are some pills or injections, but this treatment is only symptomatic, that is to say that it will alleviate the symptoms, especially the bleeding.
This type of treatment helps us to reduce the size but has a problem that is the rebound effect, that is, when we stop the treatment it returns to the original size so it is not a definitive treatment.
Myoma surgery treatments
Within the surgery we have the myomectomy, which is to remove the fibroid from the uterus, but it has a problem and that is that it affects the healthy walls of the uterus and can affect the tubes and the cavity and can lead to adhesion and, therefore, have sequelae making subsequent pregnancies impossible.
Hysterectomy is a radical treatment in which what we do is the extraction of the uterus but it is a mutilating treatment that not all women are willing to accept and neither in young people who want offspring.
There is another treatment that is embolization, which apart from being a very painful treatment, affects the healthy walls of the uterus and is not recommended in patients with gestational desire.
Now we have a new technique for the treatment of these fibroids: radiofrequency ablation.
What is radiofrequency ablation and what are its benefits?
It is a technique with Gynestar system.
We make it guided by ultrasound with an electrode, which is a very fine needle, which we introduce by ultrasound and treat the tumor directly. In this way, we do not damage the healthy walls.
This is based on the fact that the needle produces a radiofrequency and this produces a denaturation of the tumor proteins and with it the tumor reduces in size until disappearing; or a significant reduction in size to eliminate the symptoms and avoid the consequences that it is causing.
Benefits of Radiofrequency Ablation
- It is painless
- It is an ambulatory technique that is done with sedation
- It does not carry the surgical risks because it does not involve scars or risk of hemorrhage
- Allows a very fast recovery that does not require a sick leave
- Preserves fertility, which is one of the things that will always be the priority in those young patients
- The postoperative period is practically asymptomatic, some small discomfort or small bleeding but it is a slight discomfort. With an anti inflammatory one days is more than enough.
- The patient can return to her normal life the next day without any problem but we recommend 48 hours of relative rest as a precaution.
