The human papillomavirus is the infection that terrifies all the patients that enter the gynecology consultation. It is a type of virus that is related to the appearance of cervical cancer and other pathologies.

HPV is transmitted by humans to each other and is responsible for many pathologies in the body.

El type of papilloma It is classified in three groups from the gynecological point of view:

  1. Low risk.
  2. Medium risk.
  3. High risk.

Groups of medium and high risk can produce a very important type of injury that is cervical cancer. 99% is related to an appearance of cervical carcinoma.

Not all patients are screened and identified because we can have the virus every time we have sex, since we are contaminated with many strains of the papilloma virus. However, not all of them cause carcinoma and not always our immune system is weak enough to allow one of these strains that causes cervical cancer to begin to act at the level of our neck or at the level of our vagina, vulva or rectum.

How is HPV transmitted?

The human papilloma virus is transmitted by sexual contact only. The condom reduces infection and infection but does not eliminate it at 100%. This is because it is a virus that is spread through skin contact.

Obviously the condom decreases that we have it because there is part of the skin that will not be exposed but does not protect it to 100%.

What are your symptoms?

Unfortunately it does not give symptoms. However, we can control it and detect it in time because the lesions it gives are at the cytology level. Hence the importance of periodic cytological controls to diagnose it in the event that we have an active virus that is causing injury to our cells.

Not all papilloma viruses cause cervical cancer. There is a specific virus that only produces so-called genital warts. If the virus that causes the wart is contagiously infected with the virus that causes cervical cancer, there may be a risk of cancer, but if this has not happened and you only have the wart infection, this specific virus will not cause cervical cancer.

What is the treatment of the human papillomavirus?

There is no treatment because it is a virus. The way we can help the virus to not take activity is first through vaccines. It is recommended that all patients who can afford it and are not incorporated into the age range covered by social security put them on.

On the other hand we must maintain a healthy diet and take some medication that strengthens our immune system if we are a little weak. Also have an organized sex life. These are the measures that we indicate to our patients to avoid contracting it. However, the virus must know it, know that it exists and the fundamental thing is to have gynecological controls.
