7000 canaries affected by the adverse effects of a medicine for osteoporosis

La Fundació Institut Català de Farmacologia has exposed in a hard scientific article the possible adverse effects of the medicine to treat osteoporosis Denosumab, an active principle marketed by the biotech company Amgen.

According to the information revealed after the publication of the study, Denosumad It produces dependence and withdrawal syndrome, in addition to cancer. In addition, serious infections, autoimmune pathologies and cancer have increased in patients treated with Denosumab, in other studies. It should be noted that almost 10 years have passed since they reported on the efficacy and adverse effects of prolonged use of bisphosphonates.

According to the data collected by the Regional Pharmacovigilance Center, some 7.000 Canary patients are being treated with this medicine. Of these, 25 have been referred to the center for adverse reactions and in two of them multiple fractures have been confirmed after the suspension of the treatment. However, in these latter cases, it has not been possible to find a direct relationship between both factors.

Despite this alarming information, Doctors recommend to people affected and treated with Denosumad Do not stop treatment without first talking to your doctor, since this could produce a rebound effect characterized by a significant increase in the incidence of multiple vertebral fractures, accompanied by an increase in bone turnover markers.

Do you know how most osteoporosis medications work? Healthy bones break down and rebuild constantly. Most medications osteoporosis medications delay bone decay, with the exception of teriparatide. As we get older, especially women after menopause, bones wear out faster. Because bone reconstruction can not keep pace, bones deteriorate and weaken. The medications for osteoporosis basically slow down the process. These medications effectively maintain bone density and decrease the risk of fractures due to osteoporosis.

The different types of medications that help treat osteoporosis belong to the group of so-called «Bisphosphonates». All of them help maintain bone density. In addition, it has been shown that all bisphosphonates reduce the chances of suffering a fracture.

Many people who suffer from this medical condition wonder if medication treatment is the only option. A communication with the doctor responsible for the treatment is essential. However, since CanaryDoctor we want to encourage you not to rely on medications as the only treatment for osteoporosis. These practices are also important:

  • Do exercise. Physical activities that involve supporting weight and exercises that improve balance and posture can strengthen bones and reduce the likelihood of fracture. The more active and healthy you are as you get older, the less likely you are to fall and fracture a bone.
  • Eat well. Eat a healthy diet and make sure you get a sufficient amount of calcium and vitamin D.
  • Do not smoke. Smoking accelerates the decrease in bone mass.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. If you choose to drink alcohol, do it in moderation.
