Diagnosis of prostate cancer

How is prostate cancer diagnosed?

Prostate cancer can be diagnosed after:

  • See a PCA which is increased.
  • Un rectal examination suspect.
  • Una radiography showing an injury.

Faced with this situation, a committee will meet and decide to do a biopsy. In our center we choose to do a perineal biopsy because it is safer and more effective for the patient.

What is a fusion biopsy?

Fusion biopsy consists of joining the image of the resonance. Today is the best image we have to diagnose prostate cancer, with real-time ultrasound. With this we obtain a millimeter precision and, in addition, we improve the diagnostic yield of an 30% to an 90-95%.

What advantages does it offer?

In addition to the advantages that the fusion gives us, we highlight the benefits of the biopsy that we do in our center: the approach. There are two types of approach:

  • El transrectal approach, which is done through the rectum.
  • El transperineal approach, is the area between the testicles and the rectum. This approach allows total access to the prostate and obtain up to an 20% more access to tumors than with the transrectal route. In addition, through the transperineal route, being a sterile pathway, it does not pass through the rectum and, thus, we decrease infections that in many cases can become serious.
