Canarias and Diabetes, data that shake

Canary Islands in the lead in Diabetes

14 November 2018 is World Diabetes Day,disease that affects the Canaries very closely and that every day more and more worries among our specialists.

A study carried out by DARIOS speculates that the great rate of diabetic patients that we find in our islands owes its the origin to some genetic cause. Despite relating the appearance of diabetes with obesity, in Canary Islands it is significant that many of the people who have this disease do not suffer from obesity or overweight.

The 95% of diabetics in Canary Islands suffer from diabetes mellitus type 2Until recently this type of diabetes was suffered, especially, over 40 years. In recent years there has been an increase in cases among young people with a diet rich in fat.

WHO data on diabetes

The data WHO (World Health Organization) numbered 347 millions of people around the world who suffered from diabetes in the year 2008. Closer is the number of 2012: diabetes was the direct cause of nearly 1,5 million deaths. WHO forecasts are pessimistic. It is estimated that diabetes will be the seventh cause of mortality for the year 2030.

  • The diabetes epidemic is increasing rapidly in many countries.
  • A large proportion of diabetes cases are preventable
  • Diabetes can be treated

What are the main causes of mortality in Canary Islands?

According to the 3 / 2010 Opinion of the III Canarian Health Plan, 2010-2015 establishes that:

"The mortality rate in Canary Islands goes from 5,2 to 4,0 per thousand in the 2001-2007 period, while the Spanish average goes from 4,1 to 3,5 per thousand. Therefore, the gap between Canary Islands and the Spanish average has continued to decline in recent years, because the reduction in child mortality in Canary Islands has occurred at rates much higher than the Spanish average ".

In an analysis carried out by the Government of Canary Islands, it is very interesting to highlight a fact about mortality in Canary Islands. The eastern islands have always been above the western islands with respect to mortality from all causes.

These indicators are related to health, social and economic circumstances.

Unfortunately, despite Mortality due to Diabetes has decreased throughout Spain. In Canary Islands. In the case of the female sex, diabetes is the first cause of mortality in our islands with a rate of 8,6%.
