The Canary Islands Health Service begins this Monday 17 in June, in the Health Area of La Gomera, to a screening in which they are estimated to mention 5.000 gomeros, for the performance of an early detection test for Cancer of Columbus.

What is the Colorectal Cancer Prevention Program in La Gomera?

The SCS will call the population for a simple stool test, which is the first step to detect this type of cancer.

Where will you perform these early detection tests?

They will be held in all the municipalities of the island of Colombia, starting today Monday 17 June in La Hermigua.

Who will they cite?

It is estimated that, as part of this preventive program, a total of 5.000 persons, between 50 and 69 years of age, are cited.

In the coming weeks, these people will receive a citation (via letter), to attend their Health Center, where they will conduct a survey, whose data will indicate if that patient would enter or not within the Program of Prevention of Colorectal Cancer.

How is the Colorectal Cancer Early Diagnosis Test?

The test consists of a stool blood test. If it turns out to be positive, the patient will be called for a second test: colonoscopy; In this way, we seek to verify the origin of this bleeding.

To carry out the first test, the patient must take a stool sample (which he will take at home) and take it to his health center on the indicated day. All the tests of all the Municipalities will be sent for analysis to the Hospital Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

It's better to prevent…

This program will allow early detection of adenomas, before they become colorectal cancer.

It should also be noted that part of the importance of this test, is not only the early detection of a problem, but the possibility of avoiding the appearance of it. For example, if a polyp of little consequence were found, it could be removed as a preventive measure to avoid future cancer.
Without a doubt, thanks to prevention, the aim is to offer the population tools to improve their quality of life.

Specialists in Digestive System, at the head of this project

Dr. Salvador Baudet and nurse María del Mar Ardevol, accompanied by a team that includes a laboratory specialist technician and an auxiliary nursing care technician, make up the team responsible for the Colorectal Cancer Prevention Program in La Gomera, promoted by the SCS; a high-impact program for the well-being of the population of the Colombian island, in addition to the program for the Early Detection of Breast Cancer that has been underway for several years in La Gomera
