What is endometriosis and how is it treated?

Endometriosis is an abnormality in which the endometrium that is the inner layer of the uterus not only grows inside the uterus but in places far from it. These places can be the peritoneum that draws the pelvis, the ovaries, the bladder of the urine, the intestine and can even grow in areas as distant as the diaphragm or the brain.

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

The guiding symptom is pain that occurs both during the period and at the time of sexual intercourse. The pain is a disabling and intense pain that usually does not yield to the usual painkillers.

A woman with endometriosis can feel a pain so strong that sometimes it disables her normal life. In fact, it can also prevent you from having satisfactory sex. For this reason, early diagnosis and correct treatment are essential for the patient to lead a normal life as possible.

What treatments exist to treat it?

Endometriosis is usually treated with laparoscopic surgery but there are cases of minimal endometriosis where a hormonal treatment could avoid the symptoms. In these cases, the need for intervention could even be avoided.

Endometriosis and fertility

When endometriosis affects the ovaries and tubes, it produces sterility. However, once the uterus is cleaned and a lesion removal is performed, the percentage of pregnancy rises.

Nowadays, thanks to assisted reproduction techniques, any woman who has endometriosis or has been intervened with endometriosis can get pregnant with current reproduction techniques.
