Presbyopia surgery with multifocal intraocular lenses

For a few years there has been much progress in intraocular lenses and multifocal intraocular lenses have emerged. These intraocular lenses allow us to correct the patient's graduation both from a distance and close in such a way that it has been extended and nowadays we can offer surgery for presbyopia, eyestrain. Presbyopia is the difficulty to focus closely and appears in all human beings from the 40-45 years.

When the patient so demands we can perform an intervention in which we remove the lens and we put a multifocal intraocular lens that will correct both the farsightedness or nearsightedness that could have far as well as the astigmatism or presbyopia that has close. By the way, we are going to eliminate the lens, so if the patient had a cataract, we eliminated that cataract and if we did not have it, we would avoid developing it in the future.

Why do presbyopia and cataracts appear?

The crystalline lens is responsible for focusing the images on the retina and for that, it realizes a mechanism that is called the mechanism of accommodation. From the 40-45 years, the capacity of accommodation is lost, which means that the crystalline lens loses its ability to focus and that causes tired eyes or presbyopia, that is, we begin to need glasses to be able to focus. From the 50-55 years the crystalline lens loses another of its characteristics which is transparency, the crystalline lens is becoming increasingly opaque and that leads to cataracts.

Therefore, both presbyopia and cataracts originate in the lens. When we remove the lens and replace it with an intraocular lens, we are going to correct the presbyopia that is already definitively corrected with that multifocal intraocular lens, as well as the possibility of developing cataracts, since if the person does not have a crystalline lens he can not have presbyopia and It can not have cataracts.
