The eyes are a delicate area so their care is very important to have a correct visual health. For this, it is necessary to have adequate information on ophthalmology.

What is the difference between an optician and an ophthalmologist?

The two are dedicated to visual health but the optician's functions are the realization of glasses, exercises of visual therapies and graduation. On the other hand, the ophthalmologist, his role as a doctor, is to cure eye diseases and perform the operations that are needed.

How often should the vision be checked?

Normally you have to do it every two years from the 40 years but it depends on the problems that each person has. If you are a child who has a problem, you have to look every six months and if you are a young person who has a visual defect such as myopia or farsightedness, you should look every year.

How can parents know that the child has a visual problem?

When it is small it is difficult to know. The easiest is if for example you have a clogged tear because then your eyes cry a lot or you might have a lazy eye if you wink a lot. Flashing a lot means that you have an allergy problem in your eyes, if you close them or get too close to objects, you have a problem of myopia and if your head hurts when you are reading or painting, you have a problem with farsightedness.

When should the child be taken to the ophthalmologist for the first time?

If we see something when it is small we should take it, but it is normal that the first review is carried out on the four years that the child already collaborates to be able to make an adequate exploration. After this first review, if the child is well, he should go to the ophthalmologist every two years and if he has a visual problem every six months.

Is it necessary to lose the vision of an eye to be able to operate on cataracts?

In the past, you had to go blind to have surgery because the operations could go well or could go wrong then if you were already blind, it didn't matter. Today the cataract is operated at the moment when the person cannot make his normal life. It is very clear that a man who works in a banana tree will not need to have as much fine vision as a man who works in an office. Then, a person whose life is in his office or who greatly influences his vision as a photographer or a cameraman will need to have surgery long before a person who has a manual job in the field.

Is bad vision related to school failure?

When a child has attention deficit or problems at school, the first thing to look at is his visual acuity because a child does not know how he sees. He sees badly and believes that this is the vision of the whole world and until a study is done we can not really know what problem he has. Children do not complain and may have significant visual problems especially the farsightedness that makes the child see but to be able to see make a very big effort. This effort causes his head to ache and to become discouraged and unable to attend the studies.
