Cataracts, which are the opacity of the lens of the eye, are currently one of the main causes of blindness in the world. They tend to develop gradually and are more common in older patients. Early cataracts can be present for years and cause only minor vision problems. However, cataracts can progress rapidly in some cases. It is difficult to predict how quickly cataracts will lead to a noticeable problem that will require surgery. Therefore, regular eye exams are required to detect cataracts before they become a problem.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

  • Cloudy or blurry vision.
  • See colors as faded.
  • Sensitivity to light.
  • Need for stronger eyeglass prescriptions.

What are the causes of cataracts?

The single most significant factor causing cataracts is advanced age. Other factors include:

  • Eye injuries.
  • Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light radiation.
  • Genetic factors.
  • Diseases such as diabetes and iritis.
  • Cataract surgery.

More than half of Spaniards over the age of 65 have cataracts, and cataract surgery is the most commonly performed eye surgery in Spain. However, the decision to have cataract surgery is based on the number of problems they cause with daily activities that require vision, such as reading and driving at night.
