Refractive surgery corrects the specific refraction problem of each eye. The protocol followed is basically the following:
- The first step to undergo refractive eye surgery is to have a complete eye exam. During this visit, the ophthalmologist will determine if the patient is a good candidate for LASIK or other vision correction procedures. The ophthalmologist may ask questions about the patient's medical and visual history. They may also take measurements of the thickness of the cornea (pachymetry) and the shape or curvature of the cornea (corneal topography).
- With these studies The doctor obtains the measurement of the refraction of each eye and carefully checks their health status. The eyes may be dilated during the last part of the exam. It is recommended that you do not wear soft contact lenses for at least 3 days before this exam (a longer period is necessary for hard contact lens wearers)
- After the eye exam, the doctor explains the vision correction procedures available, including the risks, benefits and alternatives of each. If the patient is a good candidate for laser vision correction, the procedure can be scheduled.
LASIK and refractive surgery are usually completed on both eyes on the same day. After the procedure, the patient should return to the clinic for routine postoperative visits to ensure that the eyes are healing well and responding to treatment as expected.
