LASIK surgery is a procedure that reshapes the tissues of the cornea with a laser. For most people, LASIK can offer permanent vision correction, but it cannot change certain factors that undermine vision or eye health.
Some of these factors, for example age, are not modifiable, but others can be. People who undergo the procedure may still experience impaired vision later in life. Therefore, it is important to continue having regular eye exams after LASIK, even if your vision is good.
A 2016 study evaluating vision-related quality of life outcomes and satisfaction five years after LASIK surgery found that 91% of patients were satisfied with their vision and 94,9% were not using distance correction . Less than 2% of patients noted visual phenomena (halos and glare around bright lights), even with spectacle correction.
At the May 2016 annual meeting of the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, updates from several high-profile research studies on the safety and performance of LASIK showed impressive and consistently high ratings for safety, outcomes, and patient satisfaction. .
Two studies found:
- Patient satisfaction rate of up to 98%.
- Nearly 100% of patients achieve at least 20/40 vision, and more than 90% achieve 20/20 vision.
- Less than 1% of patients lost two or more lines (on the eye chart) of best-corrected visual acuity.
