Dry eye disease is very common in Canary Islands and is very common from certain ages. It is characterized by a series of signs and symptoms associated with poor wetting of the ocular surface. There are two main types: dry eye hiposecretor and evaporative dry eye. It depends on whether we secrete little tears or if we do not have the components that help that tear to exert its function.

How can I know if my eye is dry?

The signs and symptoms associated with dry eye disease consist of blurred vision, itching, stinging, malaise, eye fatigue, fatigue, etc.

What is the treatment of dry eye?

There are several treatments for dry eye disease that are performed in a phased manner. The main thing would be tear substitutes, eye drops and lubricating ointments. On the other hand, there are other specific and more advanced treatments with which we can achieve an improvement in dry eye disease by stimulating the production of the glands that contribute to tear production.

How does this type of treatment work?

This type of novel treatment consists in the application of a diode laser in the periocular area that stimulates the glandular regeneration that influences the tear production. The preoperative is not necessary since it is a non-surgical procedure.

How is the evaporative dry eye treatment?

The treatment for evaporative dry eye with laser consists of the application in certain periocular areas of a high-power but painless diode laser. The duration is about 5 minutes per eye. It consists of the application of 5 impacts in the area where the nerves are going to nourish the glands that interfere with tear production. Recovery is very fast with a soothing ointment the next day we can go about our normal life without any problem.

When do the results begin to be noticed?

The results of the application of the laser for glandular regeneration in the dry evaporative eye begin to be noticed from the second month after treatment. The results can be prolonged more than a year after treatment when we can do a retreat if necessary. There are no scars, it is a laser stimulation at the level of the nerve plexuses.

When can I go back to putting on makeup or sunbathing?

The patient can put on makeup just after treatment, after the ointment takes effect. It is recommended not to sunbathe until 3 or 4 days after treatment.
