How can myopia be treated?

Myopia affects a quarter of the world's population. It is estimated that 2050 will suffer half of the world's population. In patients with mild degrees, myopia causes blurred vision in far vision. But the bass even only get to see very close distances. This occurs because the eyeball grows to a size greater than normal. This can lead to problems in the retina and others such as glaucoma, a disease caused by an increase in eye pressure.

The majority of the population resorts to glasses and contact lenses after a correct evaluation by a ophthalmologist. If the patient is uncomfortable with glasses or does not tolerate contact lenses, a refractive procedure may be considered. To perform this it will be necessary to have stability of graduation, as well as other eye health conditions. Depending on the age of the patient and the amount to be corrected, there are several options that include either the use of laser or the implant of an intraocular lens.

What advantages does the Excimer Laser bring to myopia?

The excimer laser is currently the most accurate to modify the corneal tissue. After due study, we program the amount to be corrected in the device, which is produced with almost an 100% accuracy. Formerly and today in little thick corneas, this laser was made directly in the cornea. However, for years the most widely used technique worldwide is called LASIK and consists of previously lifting a corneal layer that we will then place over the wound left by the process. This way we avoid the postoperative discomfort of yesteryear.

It is a painless technique and it is very regulated. Patients return home with their eyes uncapped and with visual improvement at every hour that passes. The process presents a very small number of incidents in the right hands, being even smaller with preventive treatment before and after surgery.

The greatest discomfort occurs as a result of the dry eye that produces the intervention. In most cases with treatment based on artificial tears usually last only a few weeks resolving without major problem. But it is important to previously detect if the patient has a symptomatic dry eye syndrome which would contraindicate the operation or change postoperative management.

What are the benefits of the intervention?

Patients from the next morning noticed a significant improvement in their quality of life. There are three improvements commented by them:

1.- Patients are able to see the alarm perfectly when they wake up.

2.- You can finally see the shampoo in the shower.

3.- Do not depend on references on the beach or pool.

If the patient can not be operated with a laser, you can go to the implant of a intraocular lens. In young patients the lens will be respected to be able to focus. If they are presbyopic patients it will be replaced
