What is abdominoplasty or abdominal surgery?

Abdominoplasty is a surgical technique that focuses on removing excess skin from the abdomen. In the abdomen you have to take into account several components: one is the own musculature that when the patient has had previous pregnancies is usually weakened and that is also added the superficial layer that would be fat and skin. These three components are what we have to repair.

For example, another common case is that of the patient who has had a morbid obesity or a very large weight loss since he usually has a surplus of skin and a relaxation of the muscles. In the case of a patient who has had several pregnancies she has a laxity of the muscles of the abdomen and also the excess skin.

How is the scar of a tummy tuck?

To fix this excess skin we stretch this skin and we have a scar. This scar is going to be hidden in the bikini line just more or less where the scar of a caesarean section is, at that level. There are some techniques by which a scar of the same length as a caesarean section may remain, but they are the least common. These are techniques for patients with minimal relaxation that is not usual.

Generally the patient has an excess of skin that causes a small skirt and this is what makes us carry a scar from one side of the abdomen to the other. Through this scar we are going to treat not only the skin and the fat, but also the deep plane that is the abdominal musculature. In this way we also arrange the possibility of hernias that have been produced by pregnancies in the periumbilical area that are treated at the same time to obtain then a muscle retension after which the excess skin that the patient has is removed.

The lipoabdominoplastia: abdominoplasty plus liposuction

I usually combine the tummy tuck technique with a liposuction of the lateral areas and the flanks, that is, we transform the classic tummy tuck into a lipoabdominoplasty. This technique was developed in Brazil and gives us a much more harmonious result. We look for a rejuvenation of the abdomen and not just a stretch of the skin of the abdomen. In this way an improvement and a relocation of the navel that has yielded or fallen is obtained and placed again in its former position.

Is the postoperative complicated?

The immediate postoperative period is 24-48 hours in the clinic but then the patient goes home with a fastening band. Generally, although the first 7 to 10 days the patient has tension due to the abdominal muscles when the first 15 days have passed, the patient is already reincorporated into his normal life. But if you are going to start doing some physical activity it is recommended that you go from 4 to 6 weeks.
