What is presbyopia?

With the clinical term of presbyopia, tired eyes are commonly known. In the 4ª decade of the life the ocular components that are in charge to approach our nearest surroundings begin to lose this capacity of progressive form. So much so that, in the 5 decade, the human being loses that quality completely and requires optical aids. That is why this problem usually causes us to require glasses from approximately 45 years.

This loss of focus function is caused by the aging of the lens, which loses elasticity. This ability means that you cannot change shape to observe nearby objects. It is convenient to transfer that tired presbyopia or sight is not a disease, but a natural process of the eye. All people will suffer and there is no way to prevent its occurrence. Presbyopia has no subtype, so its diagnosis and treatment are simple.

Tests to diagnose presbyopia

The tests that are usually required to diagnose this problem are:
Retinal Exam: a deep analysis of the retina allows the ophthalmologist to rule out possible anomalies in it and thus rule out other pathologies.
Muscle integrity test: it allows to know the state of the ciliary muscles and to observe the capacity of approach with which it is counted.
Refraction test: this examination provides the specialist with information about the general state of the eyes and their refraction capacity, detecting pathologies such as myopia or astigmatism, among others.
Slit Lamp Exam: it allows to observe with detail eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, sclera and iris.
Visual acuity test: gives us information about the patient's ability to detect and discriminate details of an object located at several distances.

What are the symptoms?

The first symptoms are blurred vision at certain distances, eye strain, headaches and mental fatigue. The correct thing is that in these ages a person who has never required the use of glasses turns to the ophthalmologist to perform a complete examination of their vision and their eye health. The specialist will determine your graduation and advise the best option according to each case. In those who never used correction the most frequent is the acquisition of glasses for near vision. However, for those who already had glasses, the most common is the development of glasses with bifocal or progressive crystals.
