The COVID Skin study shows that the skin is not immune to the virus either. Five frequent skin manifestations due to coronavirus have been established since the beginning of the pandemic.
In early quarantine a team of Spanish dermatologists carried out the study COVID Skin. This study arose from the need to give firm conclusions and direct, between the relationship of coronavirus with different skin symptoms presented by several patients. The result of the COVID Piel work currently serves to take into account these skin reactions as one of the main symptoms of coronavirus infection.
According to the COVID Skin study, which has an analysis of 375 cases in two weeks and the participation of almost a hundred Spanish dermatologists, we can sort out the manifestations on the skin in five injuries main.
COVID Skin has been crucial in the dermatological study because it is the first that has been able keep record cases with skin problems by images. To date, different studies had been published on dermatological problems of patients identified with Covid-19. However, none of them had had so many cases of skin lesions, nor images to use for reference.
It has also been proven that these manifestations skin appear in the different phases evolutionary patterns of the disease, which has helped to identify them.
The five skin manifestations according to COVID Skin:
By means of a consensus strategy and the analysis of these 375 patients, five skin symptoms can be confirmed at the moment. Vesicular eruptions, present in a 9%; eruptions similar to chilblains in acral areas, En a 19%; urticarial lesions, En a 19%; livedo reticularis or necrosis, in a 6% y maculopapular eruptions in a 47%, which would be the majority.
- Acral eruptions (similar to chilblains). They have appeared on the skin as areas of erythema, pustules, and vesicles. Mostly asymmetrical. Detected in 19% of cases and in patients with early age. They are associated with a less severe prognosis, with a duration of 12,7 days and in the advanced stage of Covid-19.
- Vesicular eruptions. Have appeared mainly in the trunk as monomorphic vesicles. They can appear in the extremities with hemorrhagic content, enlarge or spread. Detected in 9% of cases with a prognosis of intermediate severity, most often in middle aged patients. A duration half of dice días.
- Urticarial lesions. Have appeared by the trunk, scattered throughout the body and even in hands. They get to produce intense itching. Detected in 19% of cases, in more serious patients.
- Maculopapules. Have appeared as specific patterns: peri-follicular, pityriasis rosea or erythema multiforme. It was the most common reaction with 47%, in more serious patients. A duration of 8 to 9 days on average.
- Livedo-reticularis or necrosis. They have appeared as a vascular obstruction. There are marks on the skin that may resemble a network. Detected in 6% of cases, in patients with a state of extreme gravity and of advanced age. The manifestations were variable in relation to the phase of Covid-19.
