Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms during pregnancy, affecting a large majority of expectant mothers, particularly in the first trimester. These symptoms can vary in intensity and duration, in some cases compromising the nutrition and general well-being of the pregnant woman. From Canary Doctor, We want to offer a series of recommendations based on the latest research and clinical practices to help alleviate these discomforts and improve quality of life during this very special time.

Understanding the Causes

Nausea in pregnancy can be attributed to several factors, including significant hormonal changes, especially increased levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and alterations in gastrointestinal function. A possible genetic predisposition and the influence of endocrine and gastrointestinal factors have also been identified. Helicobacter pylori infection and alterations in the production of certain placental hormones have also been linked to an increased risk of experiencing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Conservative Management of Nausea

  • Fractional Diet: Eating small, frequent meals can help avoid stomach emptiness and mitigate nausea. It is recommended to prioritize foods rich in slowly absorbed carbohydrates and proteins, avoiding those that are excessively fatty or spicy.
  • Iron-Free Supplements: Temporarily, it may be beneficial to stop taking supplements containing iron, as this mineral can aggravate nausea.
  • Rest and Stress Reduction: Maintaining a low stress level and getting adequate rest are key to well-being during pregnancy.
  • Preference for Warm Foods: Foods that are neither too cold nor too hot may be easier to tolerate.
  • Inclusion of Ginger: Ginger has been shown to be effective in relieving nausea. It can be consumed in different forms, always in moderation.
  • Folic Acid: Continuing folic acid supplementation is essential for fetal development, and in some cases, can help relieve nausea.

Pharmacotherapy

When conservative measures are not sufficient, it may be necessary to resort to pharmacological treatment under medical supervision:

  • Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6): It has been shown to be effective in relieving nausea and is safe during pregnancy.
  • Doxylamine with Pyridoxine: This combination treatment is commonly prescribed when dietary and lifestyle changes are not effective.

Warning Signs

It is crucial to watch for symptoms that may indicate a more serious situation, such as hyperemesis gravidarum, which requires immediate medical attention. Significant weight loss, inability to stay hydrated, and altered acid-base balance are indicative that professional assistance should be sought.

Nausea during pregnancy, although common, should not be taken lightly, especially when it interferes with the pregnant woman's quality of life or nutrition. Implementing conservative management strategies and, when necessary, pharmacological treatment, can offer significant relief. In Canary Doctor, we recommend maintaining open communication with your gynecologist to ensure a healthy and happy pregnancy.
