LASIK surgery is a procedure to reshape the cornea and correct nearsightedness. It corrects nearsightedness in most people who undergo the procedure. However, in a small number of people, the lens may undergo age-related changes. Such changes can cause a person to develop blurred vision after a few years of LASIK surgery.
The following factors can cause nearsightedness to return after LASIK:
- Have high myopia (myopia above -6.00 D).
- Coexistent astigmatism (irregular shape of the cornea).
- Excessive myopic work.
- Excessive eye strain.
- Excessive screen time.
- Aging.
- Poor nutrition affecting eye health.
- Vitamin A deficiency.
- unstable refraction.
- Acquired eye diseases such as cataracts or retinal diseases.
- Diabetes.
In most cases, refractive changes after LASIK are minor and do not cause problems. Most patients may not need to wear glasses again, except for certain tasks, such as driving at night, primarily as a safety measure.
Some patients may need to undergo further treatment to fine tune or improve. Retreatments are usually done only after 3 months once the eye has healed after LASIK surgery. In cases like:
- severe myopia,
- High risk of failure or recurrence, and
- In cases where there are other coexisting eye problems, additional laser procedures may be combined with LASIK.
