Elderly coronavirus

People 60 years of age and older are particularly vulnerable to serious infections caused by Coronavirus. Get informed and help them protect themselves.

Experts affirm that people over 60 years, even when healthy, are more likely to suffer a serious disease that threatens their lives, due to the Coronavirus.

Currently, in addition to the uncertainty that we live around at pandemic derived by the coronavirus, we are faced with an irrefutable fact: older people have the highest death rate, especially those who have latent medical conditions.

Despite there being no evidence that older people are more likely to be contagious, experts say that people over 60 even when healthy, are more likely to have a serious illness that threatens their lives. In addition, people with other conditions are particularly exposed to a higher risk. Part of that risk is due to weakening of the immune system due to age.

Basic tips for the elderly

Many of these measures we have read and seen on television or social networks, but when it comes to taking care of the health of our elders is not enough the number of times this information can be repeated. We must ensure that we are taking good care of ourselves, to prevent the coronavirus and its possible effects from reaching us. We start with the basic tips:

- Do not leave home at this time (This includes: stocking up on enough supplies to avoid going out to the supermarket or pharmacy often and trying to shop online - this may be with the help of a family member with more experience in these technology-related topics.)
- Handwashing frequently for at least 30 seconds
- Use antibacterial soap alcohol based.
- Avoid physical contact with other people.
- Disinfect objects that come from abroad.
- Stay active even in a confined situation.
- OOrganize calls or video calls daily with children, grandchildren, friends. Feeling connected even while temporarily confined at home is important to mental health.

The reality against the coronavirus

Many people think that when a disease is medically treated correctly, there is no danger. And this is what the experts are fervently trying to explain in recent days: Precautions they must be taken seriously. Both people with underlying conditions or diseases, as well as those who do not. Both older and younger people.

What is certain, is that against the coronavirus, people with previous conditions plus the added age, will see limited their stock of defenses and they will have worse reactions to the disease and their chances of recovery will be limited.

For example, people who suffer diabetes they have more difficulty fighting any infection. With diabetes, high blood sugar levels damage many different body systems, including immune system.

And in the case of people who suffer heart disease or lung conditions, it will be more difficult for their organs to follow the rhythm that the human body demands in the face of an infection by COVID-19 contamination.

What to do with non-essential medical appointments?

The non-essential medical services At the moment they are trying to cancel, but in the event that they have been maintained for whatever reason, experts recommend the cancellation of non-urgent medical appointments. The less we expose ourselves, the better.

As far as possible and whenever it is prudent to cancel non-urgent scheduled appointments, the recommendation is to call your doctor or Clinic and reschedule the appointment for later or sign up for a list so they can relocate you when all this happens.

While it is true that some people with serious conditions that require constant monitoring, they will not be able to follow these indications, such as people who have dementia, severe heart disease, Parkinson's disease, any ongoing infection, pending cures, among others. In those cases, we also recommend calling for information; because surely the doctor or clinic will have taken special measures to be able to attend emergency patients, seeking to avoid crowds of patients in the waiting rooms, among other measures.

Remember The best way to protect yourself is to limit exposure and maintain strict hygiene measures. Let's follow medical indications and keep patience. Together, we will defeat the coronavirus.

Take care of yourself and help take care of the most vulnerable ...
